B23 Richard (1) Newby Married Margaret Hick. His Parents names are not recorded. He either manufactured or traded wool OR owned a high grade Groceries shop in Peckham. This developed into sales of tea only (ideal for the delectation of the old ladies of Peckham). Richard's father served in the Indian army and died in India. Nothing more is known about him. BT. C24 Adelaide Newby married David Salmon. David owned or managed a soap factory in Yorkshire BT. Original FT
D25 Mary Newby married Professor Williams who was head of veterinary college in Edinburgh. MMN. Original FT
E18 Albert Alfred Newby married Catherine Mary Winn. Alfred joined London tea market with firm called "Cross Sun and Absolem", 6 Malcome Road, Penge, Lewisham. Thus able to select best tea's for fathers shop. Winn family reportedly upset that Catherine married into "trade". Alfred was nursed by Constance Sharpe who ended up marrying his son Harold Winn Newby after Albert Alfred passed away. BT Original FT
F28 Harold Winn Newby Educated Whitgift. Apprentice to tea brokers "Gow Wilson & Stanton". He was senior manager of Lipton Tea in Calcutta. The Lipton's dined with Harold and Constance when they were home on leave. Lord Lipton enjoying the simplicity of the meals. He met Lord Carnarvon, of Tutankamen fame, on a voyage home and gave investment advice. Hence the items of Egyptian antiquities held by Jane Holroyd. Harold formed the Indian Tea Committee to promote Indian tea throughout the world. He was musical and enjoyed singing. His sisters Marguerite Mary (Aunt Daisy) and Catherine Reed were also very musical. During world war II Harold worked in the ministry organizing shipping for food supplies etc. Interred Avondale Garden of rest Harare Zimbabwe. Granite stone marker. Harold's sister Marguerite remembered by a brass plaque on the wall of remembrance at Avondale. BT, verbal to JNT and MCT. Notes from RB
F28 Constance Sharpe (Harold wife) traveled alone out to India (1910) to marry Harold in Calcutta. A family joke arose as Eric was born 9 months later and she was teased as to whether Harold or the Ships Captain was the father. In about 1915 she brought the family home, Eric, Mary and Beryl and left Eric and Mary in the care of Aunts Daisy and Margaret so they could be schooled in England and safe during the war. She returned to India with Beryl and Norman was born later. After the war in 1919 /1920 she returned to the UK and rented a house in Redhill and later bought a house in Guilford, near Upper Bridge Road Station. MC Travers drove to Beryl Travers (nee Newby) to Guilford in early 2007 and they identified the house. Harold returned in about 1927 and they bought a house in Sutton (Holland road Beryl thinks). G29 Styan Newby Indian Police. He was chief commissioner when Edward VII visited Edward VII wished to go tiger shooting alone with Styan, Styan said no. He visited Beryl (nee Newby) and Eric Travers when they lived in Carlton. The Travers children John Newby and Mary Constance were about 11 at the time. He rode a non-descript gentle elderly pony called Bobby. Using a broom and an old ball he got Bobby going well and said he would have made a fine polo Pony!! Styan must have been nearly 80 years old at the time. Styan and Elaine bought a farm in Blanco, George, Cape, South Africa when he retired from the Indian Army. The farm name was Winton. It had the second oldest house on it in the George area. Winton is now used as a development golf academy as it is next door to the famous Fancourt golf estate. Styan and Gwen ashes are buried in the Grounds of St Georges Cathedral George RSA.
F30 Mary Boaler nee Newby. Born Calcutta. Godolphin school England. Trained as a junior school teacher. Very Bookish, clever and in "own world" sort of person. Gentle and wonderful Newby sense of humor. She taught while out in Zimbabwe. Buried at All Souls church, Westcott Road Mount Pleasant Harare. BT Verbal to JNT MCT Notes RB
G31 Eric Newby. Educated at Lancing. Worked in India in the tea business. Returned home just prior to WWII and joined army. Married Gwen in 1939. He was a good boxer and won several tournaments in the army. John Newby Travers remembers a visit by him to Bishopton Road when JNT was very small. He tried to teach JNT to box. JNT succeeded in giving him a swollen nose after a perfect left jab. After the war managed a tea estate in Nyasaland till about 1960. He returned home with the family and worked involved in business activities then joined the stock exchange specializing in tea. BT verbal
H32 Norman Newby. Educated at Lancing? Best for Eric at his sister Beryl's wedding. Musical but untutored. He played the trombone piano and violin by ear. Served in Army during WWII, being evacuated through Dunkirk. Worked for Unilevers in South Africa after the war. Buried in Durban Cemetery. JNT remembers being at home (187 Bishopton Road, when mum (his sister Beryl) received news that he had been killed in a car accident BT verbal
I37 Nigel Newby. Served in Royal Navy for a time. Then managed a tea estate in Nyasaland. Mary Travers visited after her time in Africa doing VSO. He and Margaret returned to the UK and he worked on the stock exchange and developed business interests.
33 Ruth Klapka (nee Newby) Born India. Physiotherapist. Served as Captain? In the medical corp in the war (WWII). RSN
34 Sylvia Goodman (nee Newby) Born India. War interrupted her studies at University and she trained and served in the radar section during the war as Lieutenant. Three children - John, Peter and Mike. She and Bob a fellow radar officer in the war, married in the little Blanco Church, lanco George Cape South Africa. RSN
J35 Richard Styan Newby. Born in India. Came to South Africa at age of 1 or 2. Served in WWII in North Africa and Italy with First City Regiment?. Lost his leg and ended up in hospital in Italy. Was schooled at a junior school in George and at high school in Cape Town (Bishops). Complete 9&10 in one year at Abbots college as his parents would not let him join the war until he passed matric. Studied at Elsenburg after the war and managed farms in the Langkloof, Stellenbosch, Ceres and Elgin areas. Retired to the family farm Winton outside of Blanco. Sold the farm when his wife died in 1997. Pam is also buried in the grounds of St Georges Cathedral, George, South Africa. RSN
40 Norman Russell Newby (son of H32) EH Travers was trustee to both Russell (as he wishes to be known) and his sister Barbara. It is believed he trained with the Air force and converted to Civil Aviation later. BT
41 Terrance and Shiela Newby married by Shiela's father in the Anglican Chapel in Muizenburg. Terry studied BSC Forestry and MSc in Remote Sensing. Works for the Department of Agriculture in Pretoria. Running a B&B from home - Blue Periwinkle Guest House. Their son mark has studied B.Comm and daughter Tarryn is busy studying to be a vet. RSN
42 Jennifer Elaine Benn (nee Newby) lives with her father Dick in George since her divorce. She works for a group of doctors in George. Her daughter Cyndi married Chris Miller and they are currently living in Wellington NZ. Her son Shae is a lay minister and studying to become a deacon RSN
43 Kenneth Newby (Ken) lives in Durbanville, is currently an Information Architect at a local insurance company. He married Nicky Craig and they have 3 school going daughters. The family is very active in the Cape Hunt club and Ken and Robyn were recently awarded their full colors and buttons respectively at the same hunt ball.
45 Marguerite (Daisy) Unmarried - sister to Harold ref 26. Cared for Eric (G31) and Mary (F30) Newby during WWI when Constance returned them to England from India. She lived in Goring by Sea with Catherine her sister (46). She was also quite musical with a good voice. After Catherine died she joined her brother Harold (F28) out is Salisbury (Harare) Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). A brass plaque in memory is on the wall of remembrance in Avondale garden of remembrance Salisbury. BT & RB
46 Catherine (Kate) Unmarried. Sister to Harold (F28) Cared for Eric and Mary with Daisy (45) she was head of a theological college and also acted as a secretary to a bishop. She lived with daisy in Goring until her death. BT
